Performing comes naturally to Mossman

WINFIELD—Music has always been a part of Stuart Mossman’s life.
But Mossman has other interests that are fulfilling.
He had a small role in the movie, “The Long Riders.” It was a screenplay originally developed by Jim Keach, brother of actor Stacy Keach.
“It was originally written as music,” Mossman said. “It was about Jesse James and having to change horses along the way. I was an engineer on a train. I learned how to start and stop the engine.”
Mossman liked being in the movie, for the most part, and he had the opportunity to be in another film, “Cloud Dancer.” Also starring in the film was David Carradine, well-known today for his role in “Kung Fu” and “Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.” The plot of this movie centered around aerobatic flying.
“Lunch Time” also starred Carradine. It drew attention to Mossman’s guitar factory that was in operation at Strother Field from 1965 to 1986. Mossman has since sold his business, but he has guitars made today in Texas.
Actually, Mossman is a good friend of the Carradines. He said that David is currently in Canada filming “The Legend Continues. And the “Kung Fu” series has kept viewers interested.
“I’ve known David at lots of different ages,” Mossman said. “He very seldom gets angry. He seldom uses Kung Fu. He’s a well-liked person. He knows where he’s going and what he wants to do.”
Naturally, Carradine’s role in “Kung Fu” calls for him to be calm and “think” until situations go haywire, and he must defend himself. Wouldn’t it
be great if we all could be so cool and calm?
“He’s not ‘Grasshopper,’” Mossman said.
It’s unfortunate that in the real world, verbal and physical disputes are all too common. A search for meaning exists in every soul, but the philosophy behind “Kung Fu” is not often practiced today.
Also in the Carradine family are Keith and Robert, and two other brothers, one, an architect, and the other, a minister.
“Three of the brothers have bought over three dozen guitars from us,” Mossman said. “Keith won an Academy Award for the song, ‘I’m Easy.’ He’s a terrific actor. I’m sure he’s done about 30 films. Keith is developing a strong impersonation of Will Rogers. He’s been on the road with it.”
Playing the head nerd in “Revenge of the Nerd” was Bob. A couple of months ago, Moss-man went skiing with Bob at Telluride, Colo. Mossman said Robert is a true “ski board nut.”
‘The old miners, the old-timers, used to call Telluride, ‘To Hell You Ride,”’ he joked.
Some of Mossman’s other creative sides are impersonations of Mark Twain, and he works with children, going by the name, “Grandpa Gui-tar.” He gives adult programs as well, having completed one for the expansion celebration at Cumbernauld. He sings, plays the guitar and is a storyteller.
While films are fun (and not too profitable if there’s a small role and you’re from Kansas) mu-sic is Mossman’s first choice.
“It’s the single, one thing I’ve done throughout my whole life,” he said. “I don’t think I could get along without it. I play everyday. I have no idea what happiness is. I’m driven. I try to achieve things to my satisfaction, and if I achieve it, that’s great. But happiness is way too hard for me to figure out.”
Stuart Mossman of Winfield, has appeared in several movies.
