WINFIELD ONCE LAGONDA
As to the name of the town there was something of a dispute and rivalry.
To induce his wife to leave civilization and come here to Kansas a Mr.Wood promised his bride that the new town should bear her name,Lagonda, which
name it was given and bore for some time.
Later in 1869 a W.W.Andrews,another settler,returned to Leavenworth for
his bride and used the same argument, promising to name the town Winfield in honor of Winfield Scott, the Baptist minister there.
When Mr. & Mrs.Andrews returned to their frontier home another settler sided with Mrs.Andrews as her home town in New York had borne the name of Winfield. The name of the town was changed from Lagonda to Winfield by vote at a special election.
