Dear Mr. Wright:
This is to acknowledge your letter inquiring about the Rev. Winfield Scott. I regret that we are not able to help you in finding the information you are seeking. The church at Petaluma withdrew from our fellowship some years ago and we do not have any records which would make it possible to find the information you were seeking.
Very sincerely yours,

Dictated by Mr. Orr but signed in his absence.
RE THE ABOVE - I HAD ASKED ABOUT MY COUSIN, THE
REVEREND WINFIELD SCOTT FOR GENEALOGICAL PURPOSES- HE WAS PASTOR OF THE PETALUMA CHURCH IN 1879 AND I THOUGHT THAT EVEN THE BAPTIST CHURCHES KEPT SOME RECORD OF THE PASTORS - THE CHURCH ITSELF AT PETALUMA HAS NONE - THO THIS ISN’T SURPRISING - IN MY SEARCH OF ANCESTORS IN THE EASTERN STATES -NOTABLY NEW YORK but ALOS NEW JERSEY - I FOUND A DISHEARTENING OF RECORDS IN ALL THE PROTESTANT CHURCHES -EXCEPT THE DUTCH REFORMED WHICH KEEPS METICULOUS RECORDS - AND ALSO A SPIRIT OF DON’T GIBE A DURN. WOULD YOU PLEASE LOOK AGAIN AND BE CERTAIN THAT THERE IS NO MENTION WHERE HE MIGHT HAVE GONE TO FROM THE PETALUMA CHURCH OR IF HE HAD NOT HAVE DIED IN THEIR PULPIT? THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I SHALL ENCLOSE A STAMPED ENVELOPE FOR YOUR REPLY - AND AGAIN, THANK YOU

Dear Mr. Wright:
With further reference to your cousin, the Rev. Winfield Scott, we find record of his being pastor of the Central Baptist Church of Oakland in 1879, Metropolitan Temple Baptist Church of San Francisco in 1880 and of the Jefferson Square Baptist Church of San Francisco in 1881. After that we have no record of him.
All three of the above mentioned churches are no longer in existence. After a pastor leaves an area, we do not keep a record of where they are serving. It may also be of interest to you that the Baptist churches of Northern California did not organize as a convention until 1889.
We are sorry not to be able to give you any better information.

Dear Mr. Wright:
Your letter inquiring about Winfield Scott has been referred to me. Apparently, scribes for the Church in years gone by have been pleased to acknowledge that this was the Church where Rev. Scott was baptized and ordained. I have run across mention of him on several occasions when going through records. However, I fail to recall additional reference to members of his family and to what has happened to them. I hope to keep you in mind, and, should I in the reasonable future find such information as you request, will send it to you.
We have noted the condition in Baptist churches, which you have mentioned,-namely, that they are poor reference lor tracing geneologies. This is due,undoubt-edly, to the fact that they do not practice infant baptism when birth dates, parents’ names, etc. would inevitably be recorded. Believing in immersion as evi-dence of one’s salvation and Christian witness does not necessitate, at a more mature age, the need for information relative to families. Also, records for years gone by are not so complete nor organized as at present.
Your inquiry has personal interest for me, for my grandmother was the grand-daughter of Gideon Scott’s daughter, Betsey Bloomer. My mother and her sister and some of their children’s families are still in this area. We know practically nothing of the Scott family today. Perhaps you have information to share with us. I had wondered if Winfield might be related, but had no proof. The lovely old homestead is fast falling into ruin,-
a sad sight.
I am sorry that at present I cannot give you definite assistance in your search, but I shall write you again if I find that which seems relevant.

Dear Mr. Wright:
In regard to your inquiry of Winfield Scott — you are correct — The City of Winfield, Kansas was named for him.
Quoting from material available here at City Hall, "Winfield was named for Major Winfield Scott, a Civil War Officer and Baptist missionary. In return for this honor, Scott built a stone church on the townsite." He is said to have preached the first sermon in 1870 when the Baptist Church was founded here in Winfield.
I called Miss Dorothy Bratton, of the Winfield Public Library and she says they have some material available at the library and will be glad to help you if you care to write her. I might also suggest you write the Secretary or the Reverand John D. Blythe of the First Baptist Church, 200 East Eleventh Street, Winfield, Kansas for further information.
Good luck to you in your search - sounds interesting.

Dear Mr. Wright:
Since I am no longer the Historical Secretary of the Kansas Baptist Convention I am giving your letter of inquiry concerning Winfield Scott to Dr. C. R. McBride who is the new Historical Secretary. His address is Dr. C. R. McBride, Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Seminary Heights, Kansas City, Kansas 66102.
However, I do have some suggestions to make that you might wish to follow up. Have you contacted the Kansas Historical So-ciety, Topeka, Kansas? The First Baptist Church of Winfield, Kansas, was named for Winfield Scott. I served there as pastor from 1953 to 1957 and learned of this relationship. You might write this church for information. I believe that Scottsdale, Arizonia, was also named for Winfield Scott.
I trust that you will be successful in your pursuit of in-formation concerning this remarkable man.
Sincerely yours,
Orlie Wilbur

Dear Mr. Wright:
Dr. C. R. McBride has referred your letter' of inquiry to our office. I am enclosing the address of the Kansas Historical Society--Memorial Building, 10th and Jackson, Topeka, Kansas --thinking that if you address a request to the Librarian, they would be able to indicate certain records that they may have on hand which would fill out information regarding the Rev. Winfield Scott.
We wish you well in your project and know that you have an interesting assignment ahead of you.
We send you our fraternal greetings and good wishes.
