Description
Emil shared his memories of going to Winfield High School in 1916 and Miss Simpson, American History Teacher, would inform them of the state of World War I. In 1917, he joined Company H which was a State Militia Company. This eventually became part of the National Guard. They trained at Camp Donovan near Fort Sill, OK for 9 months. Next, they went to Camp Mills, NY. In the summer of 1918, they arrived in France and joined the British Army to fight there. He remained there until Armistice Day on November 11, 1918. He remembers every soldier writing letters home to let their loved ones know that they were all looking forward to coming home. In March 1919, he began his journey to get back to Kansas. He went back by ship and landed in New York. Their ship was greeted by my organizations that welcomed them home with small gifts and necessities. They all traveled by train to Washington D.C. to be honored and then finally got on a train to Kansas.
