Description
Max shared his memories of the history of the Sonner Burner Company. It was started by Mr. Sonner, a building contractor, from Minneapolis, MN. He bought gas leases near Moline, KS around 1923 or 1924. Eventually Mr. Sonner moved his company to Winfield. Max began working for them in September 1926. He went to Texas and Oklahoma but never settled there. His living arrangements ranged from hotels to shacks. Natural gas was now beginning to be used for boilers instead of coal. When some houses in the area began becoming an electrified, then the gas boom slowed. The industry shifted and began to make pipelines to get gas to other norther states such as Nebraska and Minnesota. In 1932-1935, he lived in Avoca, Iowa. In 1936, he relocated to Eldorado, Arkansas for a few years. Around 1960 the business closed a few years after Mr. Sonner died.
