Description
Gola grew up on a farm by Timber Creek near Wilmont, KS. Her mother's family moved to Kansas from Illinois because the father's health was not well. Gola's parents grew up on adjoining farms by Timber Creek, the Cole (mother's family) and Stevens (father's family) families. There were 3 marriages that came out of the two families that farmed side by side for many years. After her parents married, they still farmed near Wilmont. She was born in 1884 and attended Wilmont school. Gola became a teacher for 3 years. She met her husband at the Wilmont school and he also taught for 3 years. He also went to Indiana for college to become a pharmacist. They moved to Newkirk, OK around 1905 and ran a store there until it burned down. She shared a memeory of her aunt pressing her petticoats for the Chautauqua meetings at Island Park in Winfield, KS. She also shared many stories of chores growing up on the farm.
