Julia grew up in Floral, KS. Her parents came from Chanute, KS around the time she was born in 1894. She went to school in Floral. The first floor was where the classrooms were and upstairs had a rec room. She finished 8th grade there. She went to high school for one year in Winfield, KS. She stayed with the C. B. Hamilton family during that year. She met her husband, Leroy, in Floral. They farmed for 12 years north of Floral, KS. She recalls their first car was a 2-door Ford roadster. They eventually moved to Winfield, KS around the time of the depression.
