Iva was born in 1894 near Burden on a farm that he parents rented. Eventually, they bought their own farm near Burden when she was a young girl. She first went to Prairie Home School near Burden. Her parents moved from southern Illinois to Kansas City area, and finally to Burden. She went to Burden High School and graduated with 14 classmates. Before attending high school, she had to pass a state exam. She began teaching near Burden after her high school graduation. She taught for 10 years and also taught while she went to college. She was a music major at Southwestern College and University of Chicago. She got married in 1925. She had to get permission from the school board to teach after she was married. Married woman were usually not allowed to teach after they were married. They lived in Burden for a few years and then setteld on a farm near Burden.
