Sherlah shared that her paternal grandparents came to Cowley County from Tennessee in the late 1800s by covered wagon. They settled near Burden, KS. Many of her aunts and uncles stayed in the area. Her grandfather owned a bank and several of his children worked at the bank including her father worked at the bank. Eventually he bought the Baden Mills. She recalls the process of milling the flour and the aprons that were worn at the mill. He also purchased a lumber yard on West 9th. Around 1920, her father took a year off from work and moved the family to California. Sherlah was 12 years old and in the 6th grade. Her father owned the Buick dealership in the 1920s. Until the death of her mother, they would have a yearly family reunion in Winfield, KS.
Her maternal grandparents came in the late 1800s and lived in Winfield, KS at 1121 East 7th for their entire lives. Her mother began a thrift shop with a few of her friends during the Depression. Often times her mother did not charge for the clothing, but she had the folks help mend the clothing that the needed. Sherlah's brothers all worked at Jarvis Auto. Sherlah attended Bryant School for 5 years. She recalls enjoying the music classes.
