Description

Ward shared that his paternal grandparents were both born in Pennsylvania in the 1830s. His father was the oldest of 3 children. In 1876 the family moved to Holland, KS. The family came to Winfield in 1878 and lived in town until 1880 when they moved to a farm a few miles west of town. Ward's maternal grandparents lived in New York state where his mother was born. In 1880 they came to Winfield, KS and lived on a farm west of town. His parents were married in 1891 and lived on their own farm west of town. In 1914, they moved to Wyoming due to a few years of bad crop yields. They only stayed there for only 6 months before returning to a farm near Kellogg, KS. Ward recalls going to school in Kellogg for 7 years. He graduated from Winfield High School. The family bought their first car, Model T, in 1919 for $600. Ward recalls the story of the Adams Gang coming by their home in 1921 when they ran out of gas. They shot his Uncle George, and he lived to tell the tale. Ward also shared how the farm implements changed over the years from horse drawn to tractors. In 1942, he married Helen, and she became his main helper around the farm. They began building a new home on their property in 1958 and moved in a year later.
