Description

Part 1 - Gus was the former Chief of Police in Winfield, KS. He was born in Oxford, KS in 1911. His parents were also born in Oxford, KS. His father's parents lived in Milwaukee, WI after coming from Germany. His mother's parents lived in Oxford, KS and Gus is unsure where they originally came from. He grew up on a farm near Oxford, KS. There were 11 kids in his family and times were tough through the Depression. After getting married in 1932 he moved to Winfield, KS. In 1933 he began to work for police department while continuing his studies at Southwestern. He quit college once he was able to get a full-time job at the police department. He shared memories of the history of the police department from 1933 until he became the Police Chief in 1942. He remained the Police Chief until 1977.

Part 2 - Gus continued to share memories of his time as Police Chief, especially the cooperation with the FBI, Kansas State Police, and towns in the area. He was proud of how the Winfield Police Department had developed into a top-notch department.
