SHORT HISTORICAL SKETCH OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, WINFIELD, KANSAS.
In the autumn of 1870, Rev. Winfield Scott of Leavenworth, a Baptist and a former chaplain in the army, came into this locality for the purpose of hunting, wild game. Having been a pastor of Prof, and Mrs. E. P. Hickok and of Mr. W. W. Andrews he was invited to preach. There being no suitable building in which to hold services an unfinished store building was used which was situated on the east side of Main street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues. Boards were carried and laid across the joists at the end of the building for the minister to stand upon, a dry goods box served as a pulpit, two boards were laid side by side from the door to pulpit and the worshippers walked in on these, dropped down between the joists and sat on them with feet on the ground. At the close of the services, on Sunday, November 27, 1870, the First Baptist Church of Winfield and the first Baptist church in Cowley county was organized with eleven constituent members as follows: Rev. and Mrs. Towsey, Prof, and Mrs. E. P. Hickok, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Mathewson, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Cochran, Mrs. J. S. Hunt, Mrs. W. W. Andrews and Mr. E. S. Bliss.
Immediate steps were taken to provide a church edifice and a stone church was erected on the west side of Millington street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues at a cost of $2260.25. The lots were donated by the Winfield Town Company. The next church building was the present edifice dedicated early in 1872. This building is still serving well its purpose as a house of worship but for the needs of the Bible School is inadequate and plans have been adopted for an Educational Building to be placed on the lots to the north of the present building.
The pastors who have served the church with the dates of their pastorates are:
E. P. Hickok, April 2, 1871-June 22, 1873.
N. L. Rigby, Jan. 22, 1873-Dec. 12, 1875.
James Cairns, Oct. 1, 1878-Oct. 1, 1884.
J. H. Reider, Jan. 2, 1885-April 1, 1887.
C. W. Currier, Dec. 1, 1887-April 17, 1889.
Geo. P. Wright, June 1, 1890-Sept. 1, 1892.
Wm. H. Parker, D. D., Oct. 1, 1892-March 18, 1900.
H. R. Best, Nov. 25, 1900-March 27, 1904.
A. J. Finch, June 1, 1904-Dec. 10, 1906.
W. O. Shank, May 25, 1907-Dec. 1, 1912.
C. F. Mathews, Jan. 12, 1913-Aprril 13, 1919.
J. J. Patterson, June 22, 1919.
Two of these died in their pastorate here C. W. Currier and Wm. H. Parker.
D. S. Sherrard and H. B. Miller were elected deacons on December 30th, 1882, an were ordained March 1883, a period of service of thirty-eight years. The first clerk was E. S. Bliss, the present clerk is his niece having held the office longer than any other— over eleven years. M. L. Wortman has the greatest number of years as superintendent of the Sunday School to his credit—eleven years. The number of those who have started their Christian life in this church joining by baptism, is 981. Those uniting with this church in the early day who still retain their membership are: Mrs. S. R. Hickok, a charter member, E. H. Bliss, Mrs. Mary Crane, Mrs. Anna Hetherington, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Mann, D. S. Sherrard and Mrs. Sherrard and H. B. Miller.
Among the many members of the church worthy of special reference was Captain Hugh Siverd, police official, murdered while making an arrest, Oct. 25, 1893. He was a good Baptist and the church was greatly roused over his death. The star with the letter S on it in the sidewalk at the corner of the Cowley County Bank marks the spot where he fell in discharge of his duty.
Various members have gone out from this church to definite Christian service as ministers, missionaries, W. C. T. U. and Y. M. C. A. workers, etc. The Church is supporting on the fields of Assam, India, two of its members, Rev. and Mrs. Wm. H. Hutton.
