COPY OF MINUTES of First Baptist Church, Winfield, Kansas
November 27, 1970
"After a sermon preached at Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas, on the above date, by Rev. Winfield Scott, State Missionary, the propriety of organizing a Baptist Church was brought under consideration. Bro. Scott being chosen moderator and Rev.
A. W. Towsey Clerk.
"Acting on the principle that a gospel church is a local, inde= pendent self-governing body of regenerated persons, baptised upon a personal profession of faith in Christ, covenanted together to keep his laws, observe his ordinances and extend his Kingdom - having no officers but pastor and deacons, it was resolved that the undersigned form themselves into such a church to be known as the First Baptist Church of Winfield, Kansas. Also that Bro. Cochrane and wife, Bro. Kickok and wife (Baptists living at Winfield but necessarily absent) be requested to become constituent members.

"After some discussion on the question of building a church
edifice the church adjourned till next evening with prayer by Bro. Scott.”

This paragraph was copied from HISTORY OF WALNUT VALLEY BAPTIST ASSOCIATION, KANSAS, published in 1921 by W. A. Ayers, Wichita, Kansas

"In a somewhat providential way this church, (Winfield First) the oldest in Cowley County of any denomination, was organized Sunday, Nov. 27, 1870, with eleven members, It is our second oldest church, and came into the Association by letter at its organization in 1871. The organization was effected by Rev. Winfield Scott, President of Kansas State Convention, who was in that section on a hunting and pleasure trip. He was asked to
conduct some religious services which were held in an uncomplete building, and this unexpected and seemingly inauspicious begin-ning resulted in establishing this church with all the good that has followed. The city was named after this man."

I have also been told that Gen Winfield Scott was one of the generals in charge of the "Trail of Tears", the moving of the Indians from the east to this part of the country, which record would, of course, be in the government records.
This is all the information that I have concerning this man.

Velma Hesket,
Church Clerk
