Scott Memorial
BAPTIST CHURCH
2716 MADISON AVENUE
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, 92116
June 22, 1966
Dear Mr. Wright:
Enclosed is two brochures which were printed at the time we celebrated the 50th anniversary of this church which
I hope will be of some help to you regarding WintieId Scott.
To my knowledge there is nothing more available. You probably know how it is in churches - as the years go by records and archives have a way of disappearing and that seems to be the case here.
I understand that both Scottsdale, Arizona and Winfield,
Kansas were both named after Chaplain Scott. It may be possible that they have some records on him.

The history of Scott Memorial Church has also been one of building new and larger structures to house an ever-growing congregation. On December 16, 1918 the original chapel was moved to the new site purchased at the comer of Oregon and Madison and placed at the rear of the lot facing south next to the alley. A new Sunday School building was added on the west side in 1919, leaving the corner free for the main auditorium, which was erected 13 years later and dedicated on Jan-uary 14, 1932.
A small frame Sunday School Annex was built in the rear of these buildings about 1938, but this was re-

placed in 1954 by a splendid two-story Sunday School Building along Madison Avenue.

A fine Gymnasium and Activities Building was com -pleted in 1958, serving for athletics, banquets, re -ceptions, classes and for Sunday evening Gospel ser -vices.

Then, to climax this aggressive construction pro-gram, our present New Church Auditorium Building was completed this last summer and dedicated during the week of July 12-19, 1962 with special dedication of each of the vital ministries of our church.

The Lord has had His Hand upon this church in a very definite way through the years. It has been evi -dent in the calling of so many of our young people in -to the Gospel ministry and other Christian work.

This spiritual "ROLL OF HONOR" includes the names of Jack Taber, Marvin Andersen, "C.J." Barnes, Billy Cumbie, George Bastian, Bud Chase, "M.D." Oates and his wife, Clifford Belle, Bill Scott, Richard Sturz, Dick Day and his wife Lois, Wayne Wagner, Ronald Cline, Beth Livingston, Alice Sturz, Sue Graham, Lotus Campbell, Barbara Richards, Joe Svensson and his wife Marian, Bill Gustafson, Gene and Pat Huntsman, Pete and Sue Steveson, Jack Mosher, and many others now in preparation and in anticipation.

This spirit of dedication on the part of our young people has also challenged Scott Memorial Church to a very active and effective Missionary Program, which now includes sharing the financial support of some 17 individuals or families in active ministry on the mis-sion fields of the world. Today the budget and associated designated giving for Missionary Projects stands ,at about $30,000.00 annually — and is still growing!
THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS
After serving in the U.S. Army, both in the Civil War and later as an Army Chaplain, Rev. Winfield Scott retired and lived for a time in Scottsdale, Arizona. In 1908, he and his wife came to San Diego and built a home in the new section known as Normal Heights.
A little community Sunday School of 10 members had been started by Luther Rice nearby and was turned over to Chaplain Scott, who on August 15, 1909 also began preaching services in the little school house at the comer of 41st and Adams Avenue.
As the interest and attendance increased, Chaplain and Mrs. Scott planned to build a chapel on a lot they had purchased at the comer of 39th Street and Madison Avenue. A building contract was let and they agreed to pay $100.00 per month on the mortgage put upon the chapel and their own home property.
Before the construction had begun, Chaplain Scott was obliged to go to a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona for an operation, where he died on October 19, 1910.
Although this seemed to present an impossible situation for Mrs. Scott, she decided to go ahead with the building of the chapel. Family and friends rallied to her assistance and the chapel was completed and occupied on February 5, 1911.
Rev. W.O. Hardin held union services for several months, followed for about a year by Rev. Wm. Reming-ton, a former classmate of Chaplain Scott.
On May 12, 1912, this little congregation decided to organize into a Baptist Church. There were 20 charter members. Rev. Columbus Wardlaw was called to be the first pastor. In memory of Chaplain Winfield Scott the church was named "SCOTT MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH." That same year, on October 15-17, the new church was received into the Southwestern Association meeting in La Mesa.
