Description

Evelyn shared her memories of when she began working as a social worker in 1936 during the Depression Era. The upper floor of the courthouse had a sewing room which was housed by women working for their grocery orders. The government supplied the fabric, and the social workers would write the orders for clothing needed by families. Their were also commodities supplied by men working for their grocery orders. The men would grow vegetables in their own gardens and bring them into the courthouse. The government would also supply fresh fruit for clients. People from all walks of life had no jobs and this was a very trying time for Cowley County. The social workers even had to endure threats from people wanting help from the government.
