Description

Vea shared memories of her parents coming to the New Salem area from Illinois in 1873. Her father was born in Tennessee and moved to Illinois. While in Illinois he volunteered to be in the Civil War. Vea was one of 11 children. She recalls that it took her father 3 days to travel to Emporia to sell his crops. Her father passed away in 1907 and the family moved to Winfield in 1909. Vea went to Southwestern to learn shorthand and other office skills. Her first job in Winfield paid $3.00 a week.

Carl shared that his family came here in 1888 by train and settled in the Tisdale area. They raised cattle and he shared how they drove the cattle from Oklahoma. They would travel 10-12 miles a day. Settlers in the area would make molasses and he recalled production process. Carl was also part of a men's quartet that would sing for events in the community.
