Description
Howard was born in 1900 in Winfield, KS. He was raised by his grandparents. They moved here from North Carolina after the Civil War. They were both slaves on a plantation. His grandfather worked for the city street department. He remembered the large stones his grandfather would lay. He shared memories of his chilhood days in Winfield. He went to the Bryant school, Lowell school, and finished the 8th grade. He worked for W. C. Robinson taking care of the house and chauffer. He drove them to Salem, Massachusetts and New York City. In 1920, he married Dorothy Norris in Wichita, KS. They had 6 children and all but one live in Chicago, IL. After W. C. Robinson passed away, Howard began to work for the city.
