Description
Myrtle recalled that her father came to Winfield, KS from Indiana. Her parents met in Winfield, KS. The first school she attended was Webster School. Her maternal grandparents started the stone quarry. The First National Bank Building, Baptist Church, and Masonic Building were all made from the stones from the quarry. The railroad was used to bring the stones into town. A cyclone came through town during a Chautauqua event when Myrtle was a young girl. She recalls going about town with her father in a wagon. She recalls the Mule Cars that took folks about town that ran on a track. They were eventually replaced by electric street cars. She also recalled a steamboat that ran on the Walnut River to Cast Iron Park that was 5 miles from town. An Old Soldiers Reunion happened yearly in Winfield, KS and the veterans would camp in town. In 1906 he recalls getting gas lighting in their family home. In 1907, she was married in Winfield, KS. They had 3 children.
