Description

Mary recalls stories of her father attending Maple Grove School east of Winfield. Upon graduating, he took the teaching exam in Winfield and returned to Maple Grove as a teacher. One of his pupils eventually became his wife. He also taught at Olive School. He studied for his law license from his brother-in-law in Kingman, KS. After passing the law exam, the family moved back to the farm east of Winfield. Her father built some stone and brick homes in Winfield.
In 1895, Mary attended Webster (East Ward) and remembers Miss Williams, Miss Johnson, and Professor Peters. She also attended Maple Grove School. They lived in Winfield when her father was a county clerk. For a time, they lived on the farm east of town and eventually returned to living in Winfield where she finished school. In 1903, Gilbert Twigg shot and killed 9 people in Winfield during a music concert on 9th and Main. Mary and her family were in an ice cream parlor in town at the time of the shooting. Mr. Twigg committed suicide before he was apprehended. She married in 1911. Her husband's father owned the College Hill Grocery store. In 1926 there were over 50 grocery stores in Winfield. Without refrigerators, many folks went to the store daily. In 1912, her father built her the farmhouse she still lived in at the time of the interview.
